Red
Albarossa
A Piedmontese crossing giving a deeply coloured red with high acid, firm tannin and dark fruit. It is permitted in the regional Piemonte appellation and grown in small quantities, mostly by producers curious about what it can do.
Worth knowing
It was bred by Giovanni Dalmasso in 1938, intended as a cross of Nebbiolo and Barbera. DNA testing later showed the parent he used was Chatus rather than Nebbiolo, so the grape is the product of a mislabelled vine in a research plot.
