Red
Cagnulari
A Sardinian red of the northwest, now largely restricted to the province of Sassari, with the village of Usini as its main centre. It gives a medium bodied wine with red and black fruit, soft tannin and a herbal, slightly rustic edge, and it is mostly drunk on the island.
Worth knowing
It was close to disappearing before Giovanni Cherchi, a grower at Usini, set about propagating the few surviving vines to make a varietal wine. His estate, founded in 1970, is credited with bringing it back.
