RedLead grape in 1
Carignano
Also called Carignan, Mazuelo.
The red of the Sulcis, on the southwest corner of Sardinia, grown as low bush vines in sand a short distance from the sea. It gives dark fruit, warm spice and soft tannin, fuller and rounder than the same variety usually manages elsewhere, and the old vine bottlings have real depth.
Worth knowing
The vines sit on their own roots, because phylloxera cannot get established in pure sand. Some of them are well over a century old, which makes the Sulcis one of a small number of places in Europe with continuous ungrafted plantings of a major variety.
