Cesanese Comune
The higher yielding of the two Cesaneses, grown in the same Lazio hills southeast of Rome. It gives a lighter, simpler wine than Cesanese di Affile, with red fruit and a peppery note but less concentration and less grip.
Worth knowing
The appellation rules of Piglio and Olevano Romano allow either Cesanese, and most old vineyards carry a mix. The producers making the serious wines have generally been replanting towards Affile, which is a slow and expensive way to change a wine's character.
