Cesanese di Affile
Lazio's serious red, from a small zone in the hills southeast of Rome around Piglio, Affile and Olevano Romano. Medium bodied, with red cherry, black pepper and a floral note over fine tannin. Cesanese di Affile is the smaller berried, better version; Cesanese Comune crops more and gives a plainer wine.
Worth knowing
Cesanese del Piglio is the only DOCG red in Lazio, in a region that almost everybody thinks of as white wine country. The entire zone is small enough to drive across in twenty minutes.
