Red

Chatus

A red grown in small quantities in the Piedmontese Alps around Saluzzo and the Pinerolese, and known locally as Nebbiolo di Dronero despite having no relationship to Nebbiolo. It gives deep colour, firm tannin and dark fruit.

Worth knowing

It is the accidental parent of Albarossa, having been mistaken for Nebbiolo in a 1930s breeding programme. It is originally French, from the Ardèche, and has almost disappeared there while surviving on the Italian side of the Alps.
