Grapes

Red

Corvinone

A Veronese red long assumed to be a large berried version of Corvina and shown by DNA work to be a separate variety. It gives bigger bunches, thicker skins and more tannin than Corvina, and it holds up particularly well through the months of drying for Amarone.

Worth knowing

The rules of Valpolicella allow it to replace up to half the Corvina in a blend, which is an unusual accommodation for a grape that was officially the same thing as Corvina until relatively recently.
