Red

Doux d'Henry

A pale red of the Pinerolese, west of Turin, made into its own varietal wine within the appellation. It is lighter and softer even than the other Alpine reds around it, closer to a rosé than a red, with gentle fruit and almost no tannin.

Worth knowing

Legend says it was named for King Henry IV of France, who was served the wine at a meeting with Charles Emmanuel I of Savoy and praised it, and doux is said to refer to the sweetness the wines can have. There is no historical evidence for the story or for a French origin, and the grape appears to come from the Chisone valley.
