White

Erbamat

A white of the Brescia hills in Lombardy, very late ripening and very high in acid, permitted in Franciacorta as a minority component. It gives little aroma and a great deal of freshness, which is precisely the job it was brought back to do.

Worth knowing

It was added to the Franciacorta rules in 2017, explicitly as an answer to warming vintages: as Chardonnay ripens earlier and loses acid, a late ripening local variety puts it back. It is one of very few cases where an appellation has changed its rules for climate reasons and named the grape to do it.
