Franconia
Also called Blaufränkisch.
The Italian name for Blaufränkisch, grown in Friuli and in small amounts in Lombardy. It gives dark berry fruit, firm acid, moderate tannin and a peppery, savoury edge. It is a central European variety that reached the northeast through the Habsburg empire.
Worth knowing
It carries three names across a small area of Europe: Blaufränkisch in Austria, Kékfrankos in Hungary and Franconia in Italy. The Italian plantings are the westernmost edge of a variety that is a serious matter a few hundred kilometres east.
