RedLead grape in 1
Girò
A Sardinian red grown around Cagliari and made sweet, either by drying the grapes or by fortifying the wine. It gives a warm, dried cherry and orange peel character with real sweetness and enough acid to carry it. Very little is made and most of it is drunk on the island.
Worth knowing
It is one of a group of Sardinian sweet wines, alongside Nasco and Monica, that survive mostly through local tradition rather than any market. The style belongs to a world of fortified and dried wines that Sardinia kept making after the mainland moved on.
