RedLead grape in 1
Lambrusco
Less one grape than a group of them, and the rules of several appellations in Emilia just say Lambrusco and leave the choice open. What they share is a frothy red wine, usually made in tank rather than bottle, drunk cold and young with the fat food of Emilia. Dry versions have come back strongly in the last twenty years.
Worth knowing
The reputation problem was an export problem. What went to America in the 1970s and 1980s was sweet, low in alcohol and made to compete with soft drinks. What Modena drank at home was dry and served with prosciutto, and the two wines had almost nothing in common beyond the name.
