Red
Massaretta
Also called Barsaglina.
A red of the terraced marble country above Massa and Carrara, permitted in Candia dei Colli Apuani alongside Sangiovese and Vermentino Nero. The local reds are light and peppery and drunk almost entirely where they are made.
Worth knowing
Massaretta is the local name for Barsaglina, taken from the town of Massa and first recorded as a Carrara synonym in 1874. DNA analysis points to a natural cross between Visparola and an unknown parent.
