Red
Oseleta
A Veronese red with very small, thick skinned berries, giving intense colour, high tannin and dark, bitter fruit. It is permitted in small proportions in Valpolicella and Amarone, where it adds structure to a blend built on softer grapes.
Worth knowing
It had effectively disappeared and was recovered from wild vines found in hedgerows in the 1970s. The name is thought to refer to birds, which went for the small sweet berries, and the tiny berry size is why it gives so much colour and tannin for its weight.
