Pelaverga
Also called Cari, Pelaverga Grosso, Pelaverga di Cari.
A pale Piedmontese red grown in the hills around Saluzzo and Turin, light in body with red berry fruit, a peppery note and gentle tannin. It is a wine for drinking rather than keeping, and it survives in small quantities because a few growers refused to replant.
Worth knowing
It is a different vine from Pelaverga Piccolo, the one grown at Verduno in the Barolo zone, which has its own appellation and considerably more of a reputation. The two are regularly confused and the small berried Verduno version is the one people mean.
