Torbato
A white grown around Alghero in northwest Sardinia, where the town still speaks a form of Catalan. It gives a dry wine with citrus, herbs and a saline, slightly bitter finish, and it also makes a good traditional method sparkling wine.
Worth knowing
It arrived with the Catalans and is the same vine as the Trobat of Roussillon and northern Catalonia. Almost all of it in Italy is grown by a single large producer at Alghero, which makes it one of the few Italian varieties whose survival rests with one company.
