Red
Vermentino Nero
A red grown in the Candia hills above Carrara in northern Tuscany, giving a light to medium bodied wine with red fruit, a herbal note and soft tannin. There is very little of it and it is mostly drunk locally.
Worth knowing
It was long assumed to be a dark skinned mutation of white Vermentino, and DNA profiling has never confirmed that. Its relationship to Vermentino remains unestablished. The Candia dei Colli Apuani vineyards sit on steep terraces between the Apuan Alps and the sea.
