WhiteLead grape in 1
Vernaccia di San Gimignano
The white of the towered hill town in Tuscany, grown on sandstone and clay around it. It gives a dry wine with citrus, green almond and a firm bitter finish, with more grip than most central Italian whites and a capacity to age that the better producers have been demonstrating for years.
Worth knowing
It was in the very first group of DOCs granted in 1966, ahead of Barolo and Brunello, and it is the only white in Tuscany at DOCG level. It is unrelated to the Vernaccias of Sardinia and the Marche, which share nothing with it beyond a name meaning roughly local grape.
