What makes it special

Italy's smallest region has a single DOC, Valle d'Aosta, divided into subzones along the valley. The vineyards cling to slopes beneath Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn.

What makes it unique

At Morgex and La Salle, Prié Blanc grows at up to about 1,200 metres, among the highest vineyards in Europe. Further down the valley, Petit Rouge and Fumin make mountain reds that are rarely seen outside the region.

Why you should care

It is tiny, the wines rarely leave the valley, and that is the point: this is mountain wine made in quantities that only make sense for the people who live there. Finding a bottle is a small achievement in itself.
