Dolcetto d'Alba DOC
The everyday red of the Langhe, made by nearly every Barolo and Barbaresco producer from sites too cool or too low for nebbiolo. Dark purple, blackberry, black cherry, violet and almond skin, low acid, moderate alcohol and a firm bitter-edged tannin that keeps it savory. Best young, ideally within four or five years. It's the wine those producers actually drink at lunch, and a good one tells you a lot about the house style.
