Primitivo di Manduria DOC
Puglia's most famous red and the home ground of Primitivo, the same grape as California Zinfandel, grown as head trained bushes in red sandy soil near the Ionian sea. The wine is deep purple, ripe and warm at 14 to 16%, with blackberry jam, black cherry, fig, sweet spice, cocoa and a tarry, slightly balsamic edge, soft tannin and low to moderate acidity. The commercial versions are plush and easy; the best (Fino, Felline, Attanasio) add dried rose, mineral grip and length.
