Tavoliere delle Puglie (Tavoliere) DOC
A 2011 DOC created to give Nero di Troia from the Foggia plain a denomination of its own, mirroring what Castel del Monte does for the Murge hills. The reds are deep ruby with black cherry, mulberry, violet, black pepper and a leafy, savory note, medium plus tannin that can be firm and dusty when young, and moderate alcohol for the south. The varietal Nero di Troia and riserva are the ones to look for; rosati are dark and dry. Uptake is still modest, with a few Foggia estates using it in place of Puglia IGT.
