Vernaccia di Oristano DOC
Sardinia's answer to sherry: an unfortified white aged for years in old chestnut and oak casks under a native flor, in the humid air of the Tirso plain. The wine is amber, bone dry, with toasted hazelnut, bitter almond, dried apricot, orange peel and a salty, slightly medicinal finish, often at 15 to 16% alcohol from ageing alone. Riserva must have four years in wood. Contini's old solera blends are among the finest oxidative wines in Italy and shockingly cheap for what they are.
