WhiteLead grape in 1
Albana
A Romagnolo white with thick skins, real body and a bitter almond finish, made dry, sweet and increasingly with skin contact, where the tannin in those skins gives it structure most whites cannot manage. The passito is the historically important version and the dry one has improved enormously.
Worth knowing
In 1987 it became the first Italian white to be promoted to DOCG, and the decision was widely regarded as political rather than qualitative. The grape has spent the decades since earning the status it was handed early.
