Avanà
An Alpine red from the Susa valley and the Pinerolese, west of Turin at the foot of the mountains. Light in colour and body, high in acid, with red fruit and a herbal, almost mountain edge. It is grown on terraces at altitudes where ripening anything is an achievement.
Worth knowing
The Valsusa vineyards are among the highest and steepest in Piedmont, and the appellation exists mostly to stop the last of them disappearing. The total area planted to Avana would fit inside a single large estate in the Langhe.
