Valsusa DOC

A heroic-viticulture DOC on terraced slopes in the Susa valley, one of the highest vineyard zones in Piedmont, built around alpine grapes that exist nowhere else: Avanà, Becuet and the white Baratuciat. Avanà makes a pale, light, tart red with sour cherry, cranberry, alpine herbs and low tannin; Becuet is darker and more peppery. Baratuciat is a sharp, citrusy, herbal white. Production is tiny and almost entirely consumed in the Turin area.
