Baratuciat
A white of the Susa valley west of Turin, one of the highest vineyard zones in Piedmont. It gives a sharp, citrus and herbal wine with high acid, and it was added to the Valsusa appellation later than the local reds, once a few growers had shown it could make something worth bottling.
Worth knowing
The name is close to the Piedmontese dialect words for a cat's testicles, a reference either to the shape of the berries or to an aroma that can recall a cat's litter box. It was saved by Giorgio Falca, an Almese grower who took over his grandfather's century old vines in the 1970s, and it joined the Valsusa appellation in 2019.
