Red
Becuet
Also called Persan.
A red of the Susa valley, grown on steep terraces near the French border. It is darker and more peppery than Avanà, the lighter red it grows beside, and goes into the small quantity of Valsusa red that is almost entirely drunk around Turin.
Worth knowing
It is the same vine as Persan, an old variety of French Savoie on the other side of the Alps, and Becuet is its official name in Italy. That makes it a border crossing grape, which is what you would expect in a valley that has long been a main route into France.
