WhiteLead grape in 1
Biancolella
The white of Ischia, grown on volcanic terraces that fall to the sea, and found along the Amalfi coast and on Capri. It gives a light, taut wine with citrus, herbs and a salty finish, low in alcohol by southern standards. The vineyards are worked by hand because nothing else can reach them.
Worth knowing
Ischia was one of the first DOCs in Italy, granted in 1966 in the very first group. The island was making wine commercially when much of the mainland south was still selling grapes by the tanker, and it has been losing vineyards to tourism ever since.
