What makes it special

Campania has a strong claim to be the most complete wine region of the south. Taurasi, from Aglianico, is one of Italy's great reds, and Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo are among its best whites, all from the hills of Irpinia inland from Naples.

What makes it unique

Volcanoes shape the region, from Vesuvius to the Campi Flegrei, and some vines in the loose volcanic soil still grow on their own roots. Wine has been made here since antiquity: the Romans prized Falernian wine from northern Campania, and vines grow again inside the ruins of Pompeii.

Why you should care

Few regions give you this much range: ancient grapes, volcanic soils and wines that can age for decades, at prices well below their northern equivalents.
