Bovale Sardo
A Sardinian red grown in the centre of the island around Mandrolisai and on the Campidano plain at Terralba. It gives colour, firm acid and a tight, peppery, slightly rustic wine, usually blended with Cannonau and Monica rather than bottled alone.
Worth knowing
There are two Bovales and they are different vines. DNA work found that Bovale Sardo closely resembles Graciano, the Rioja blending grape, sharing 19 of the 24 alleles tested, while showing the two are genetically different. Bovale Grande is generally identified with Carignano.
