RedLead grape in 1
Casavecchia
A red from a small area north of Caserta in Campania, giving a dark, earthy, firmly tannic wine with black fruit, tobacco and a wild herbal note. It is grown by a handful of producers on a few dozen hectares and was effectively unknown outside its own villages until the 1990s.
Worth knowing
The name means old house, and the story is that the surviving vine was found growing in the ruins of one. The story is charming, it is told identically by everybody in the zone, and it has never been documented.
