Red
Castiglione
A red grown almost only in Calabria, in the provinces of Cosenza and Reggio Calabria, and permitted in Bivongi, a remote appellation behind the Ionian coast. It is a late ripening vine with big black berries, mostly blended with Gaglioppo and Nocera, and on its own it gives a ruby, slightly tannic and acidic wine with good body.
Worth knowing
Its spread is very limited, and little is known about it beyond its description in the vine catalogues. Almost nothing is bottled under the Bivongi name, so the grape is rarely met as a wine in its own right.
