What makes it special

The toe of Italy, with sea on three sides and mountains down the middle. Cirò, on the Ionian coast, is its best known wine, made mostly from Gaglioppo.

What makes it unique

The ancient Greeks called the far south of Italy Oenotria, a name usually traced to their word for wine. Calabria still grows grapes found almost nowhere else, like Magliocco and Greco Bianco.

Why you should care

Calabria spent a long time selling grapes and bulk wine to other people. The growers now bottling their own are showing what these old varieties can do, and prices are still modest.
