Red
Colorino
A Tuscan red grown for colour, as the name says. Thick skinned, deeply pigmented, low in aroma, blended in small amounts into Chianti and other Sangiovese wines to darken them. On its own it is dark and rather blunt.
Worth knowing
It was also traditionally used in the governo all'uso toscano, where dried grapes were added to a finished wine to restart fermentation and soften it. Several distinct Colorinos exist, of which Colorino del Valdarno is the one usually meant.
