Red
Cornalin
Also called Cornalin d'Aoste, Humagne Rouge.
A red named for the Valle d'Aosta, giving a deeply coloured, firm, dark fruited wine with good acid and a herbal edge. It is now almost extinct in the valley, and most of it grows across the border in the Swiss Valais under the name Humagne Rouge.
Worth knowing
DNA work showed that Cornalin d'Aoste and the Valais Humagne Rouge are the same grape, and that it is an offspring of Rouge du Pays. The Valais then muddied things: Rouge du Pays took the name Cornalin only in 1972, borrowing it from the Aosta grape, which had been called Cornalin since 1837.
