White
Forastera
A white of Ischia, grown on volcanic terraces above the sea alongside Biancolella, giving a dry wine with citrus, herbs and a saline finish, a little fuller and softer than the grape it grows beside. The two are usually blended together.
Worth knowing
The name means foreign, which suggests the vine came from somewhere else, though where is not recorded. It was first documented on Ischia in 1877, and it spread across the island's vineyards as they were replanted on American rootstock after phylloxera.
