Fortana
Also called Uva d'Oro.
A red of the sandy coastal strip south of the Po delta, in the Bosco Eliceo, where the vineyards sit on old dunes a few kilometres from the Adriatic. High acid, light tannin and a sharp red fruit character, usually made frizzante and drunk very cold with eel from the lagoons.
Worth knowing
Like the Sulcis, these vines grow ungrafted in sand where phylloxera could not spread. Its other name, Uva d'Oro, has two explanations in circulation: that Renée of France brought the vine from the Côte d'Or to the Este court at Ferrara, or that golden grape refers to how productive it is. Neither has been settled.
