White
Kerner
A crossing of Schiava and Riesling grown in Alto Adige, mostly at altitude in the Isarco valley. It gives high acid, a light muscat lift and a citrus and stone fruit character with a firm mineral finish. It handles cold sites better than almost anything else planted there.
Worth knowing
It was bred in Württemberg in the 1920s and named after a German poet who wrote drinking songs. In Italy it is grown almost exclusively in one narrow valley, where the altitude suits it and where it makes better wine than it does in the country that created it.
