What makes it special

Two provinces under one name. Alto Adige in the north is German speaking and alpine, known for whites of real precision, while Trentino to the south makes Teroldego and Trento DOC, a traditional method sparkling wine.

What makes it unique

Vineyards here climb from the valley floor to above 1,000 metres, so a single valley can ripen Lagrein on warm gravel low down and Müller-Thurgau high on the slopes. Many labels in Alto Adige are bilingual, and its cooperative wineries have an unusually strong reputation.

Why you should care

For fresh, clean wines with altitude in them, few places in Italy are as consistent. Most bottles are labelled by grape, which also makes this one of the easiest Italian regions to start with.
