Red
Malbo Gentile
A red of the hills south of Reggio Emilia, in the Colli di Scandiano e di Canossa appellation. It gives a dark, tannic wine usually made frizzante and sometimes sweet, and it is also used to add colour and structure to the Lambrusco blends of the area.
Worth knowing
Its role is the same as Ancellotta's on the plain: a deeply coloured grape that props up lighter wines around it. Unlike Ancellotta it has its own varietal bottling in its home appellation, which is how it avoided disappearing into other people's blends.
