Moscato di Scanzo

A red Moscato grown on a handful of hillsides at Scanzorosciate, just east of Bergamo. The grapes are dried for a month or more and made into a sweet red with rose, dried cherry and a distinct sage note, served with hard cheese rather than dessert in its home town.

Worth knowing

Its appellation is the smallest DOCG in Italy, a few dozen hectares on marl slopes, producing a quantity of wine that would disappear inside a single Piedmontese cooperative. Almost none of it leaves Lombardy.
