Grapes

Red

Neretta Cuneese

A red permitted in the Valsusa appellation, in the high terraced Susa valley west of Turin, alongside Avanà, Becuet, Barbera and Dolcetto. The reds of the zone are pale, tart and light, and production is small enough that almost all of it stays around Turin.

Worth knowing

The name means the little black one from Cuneo, which is a description rather than an identity. Piedmont has several dark local vines with names built on nero, and the naming makes it hard to be sure which old plantings are which.
