WhiteLead grape in 1
Ortrugo
A white of the Piacenza hills, giving a light, dry, faintly bitter wine with green apple and almond, usually made frizzante and drunk locally with salumi. It was for a long time a blending partner for Malvasia and now stands on its own in its own appellation.
Worth knowing
The name means roughly the other grape in local dialect, which is what it was: the thing planted alongside the variety that mattered. It is one of the few grapes anywhere whose name openly admits to being an afterthought.
