Red
Pallagrello Nero
A red from the hills north of Caserta in Campania, giving a medium to full bodied wine with dark cherry, spice and moderate tannin. It very nearly disappeared and survives now on a small acreage, grown alongside its white counterpart.
Worth knowing
In 1775 King Ferdinand IV had the Vigna del Ventaglio laid out at San Leucio above the Caserta palace, a fan of ten rows each planted to a different variety, and Pallagrello was among the king's favoured grapes. It faded after Italian unification and phylloxera and was only recovered in the mid 1990s.
