Petit Verdot
A Bordeaux red used in small quantities in Bolgheri and the Maremma, where the long Tuscan coastal season ripens it more reliably than Bordeaux ever managed. It gives dark colour, violet perfume, firm tannin and real structure in a blend.
Worth knowing
In its French home it is often unripe and was being pulled up for decades. Moved to a warmer place it becomes a serious component, which is the same story as Cabernet Sauvignon in Bolgheri told at a smaller scale.
