Picolit
A Friulian sweet white from the hills of the Colli Orientali, made from grapes dried on racks or left late on the vine. It gives a delicate, floral wine with apricot, acacia honey and a light body, more perfumed than viscous, which sets it apart from most Italian dessert wines.
Worth knowing
Its yields are tiny because most of the flowers never set fruit, a condition called acinellatura that leaves the bunches half empty. That failure is the wine: the few berries that do form get everything the vine has. It made Picolit famous in the eighteenth century and nearly killed it commercially in the twentieth.
