What makes it special

Friuli is Italy's great white wine region. Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana and Sauvignon come from the Collio and Colli Orientali hills along the Slovenian border, with a texture and precision that set the standard for modern Italian whites.

What makes it unique

This is where orange wine came back. From the 1990s a few producers around Oslavia returned to fermenting white grapes on their skins, some of them later in clay amphorae, and started a movement that spread far beyond Italy. Picolit and Ramandolo add sweet wines found almost nowhere else.

Why you should care

If you think Italian white wine is simple, Friuli will change your mind. It also sits where Italian, Slovenian and Austrian culture meet, and you can taste that crossroads in the glass.

12 of these still need a bottle. See them on the wanted list.
