Red
Pignolo
A Friulian red from the Colli Orientali, and one of the most tannic and slow moving wines in Italy. Dark, dense, with black fruit, spice and a structure that needs a decade before it says much. Yields are tiny and the vine is difficult, which is why there is so little.
Worth knowing
It came within a few vines of extinction. The surviving plants were found in the 1970s in the grounds of the abbey at Rosazzo, and everything planted since descends from that material.
