Pinot Meunier
A mutation of Pinot Nero with downy white hairs on the leaves, grown in very small quantities in Trentino and permitted in Trento, the traditional method sparkling appellation. It ripens earlier than Pinot Nero and brings fruit and body to a blend.
Worth knowing
It is the third grape of Champagne and barely registers in Italy, where the sparkling appellations lean on Chardonnay and Pinot Nero. Its name is from the French for miller, for the floury look of the leaves.
